What is Motivation: Motivation is a psychological feature that arouses an organism to act towards a desired goal and elicits, controls, and sustains certain goal-directed behaviors. It can be considered a driving force; a psychological one that compels or reinforces an action toward a desired goal. For example, hunger is a motivation that elicits a desire to eat. Motivation is the purpose or psychological cause of an action.
Motivation has been shown to have roots in physiological, behavioral, cognitive, and social areas. Motivation may be rooted in a basic impulse to optimize well-being, minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure. It can also originate from specific physical needs such as eating, sleeping or resting, and sex.
Motivation is an inner drive to behave or act in a certain manner. “It’s the difference between waking up before dawn to pound the pavement and lazing around the house all day.”These inner conditions such as wishes, desires, goals, activate to move in a particular direction in behaviour.
I felt compelled to write this article as it has been something that I have been asked about a lot in my life and has recently been raised a few times. What is motivation?
What motivates me what motivates you. For some of us its purely the desire to just survive for others its a shiny new car or new job and for athletes its what keeps us going and looking for the next PB.
Different things have motivated me during my life and they have changed over the years. What motivated me when I was 22 is very different from what motivates me now. At 22 it was survival and breaking out from the commission housing area I had been raised in and now it is enjoying what life has to offer everyday. My life has changed from one of accumulation and identification to very simple things like a coffee with a friend to a swim at the beach or a chat with my sister. Like many young people in the area I grew up in I had to choose a path. Stay stuck in my current environment which was pretty bad or work hard to break free and lead the life I wanted. The one thing that consistently got me through all the tough years was my training. I always felt grounded and at ease once I hit the track or football field, it was the ultimate equaliser. It didn’t matter if you had money or not, drove a nice car or a bomb, lived in a commission house or a mansion once you pulled on your football boots or running spikes all that went out the window. You had just as much chance of winning as the guy beside you. But one thing was for sure you were probably both very motivated. Motivation must come from within and it’s often those with less in life that are more motivated. Not always but there appears to be plenty of examples. Motivation comes in many forms and what motivates you today may not be the same in 5 or 10 years time. One thing is for sure there is something out there that motivates all of us you just need to keep searching. For some they don’t have to search very hard to get motivated it just comes naturally. I have been very fortunate in life that I have never found it difficult to get motivated however I would put this down to surrounding myself with other highly motivated individuals. One of the most difficult things in life that has taken a huge amount of effort and motivation on my part is the ability to just sit in the moment and just accept things as they are. I was one of those people that just struggled to sit still I had to be doing something all the time. But I was motivated to change, as I wanted to experience stillness. Today I am motivated by lots of different things. Learning new skills, seeing the guys I coach get excited when they improve, connecting with and supporting my close friends and family, being a better person, helping others achieve their goals, but most of all just getting out of bed and putting my feet on the ground and seeing what the day holds is my greatest motivation. Because everyday is different and you just don’t know what is around the corner.
