Change seems to be one of those things that most of us struggle with or resist. I caught up with a friend last night who was in town for a few days and we were talking about making a change in life and finding direction.
We spoke about finding purpose in the small things and finding time to make the changes you want. It made me reflect on the last 12 months of my life and how you can make substantial changes if you break things down into small chunks.
If you look at the overall size of the task in front of you, you will often feel overwhelmed and never make a start. But if you can break that task down into days/weeks/months and just start small, after a few months you start to see change.
After shoulder surgery last year and being in sling for 4-6 weeks the thought of getting back into shape and getting my strength back was daunting. The task in front of me was overwhelming. The first few months were very frustrating and felt like I was never going to get back my strength and be able to enjoy working out like I used to. Just over 12 months later I am about to compete in my first Hyrox race.
Starting small and focusing on what I could do and not what I couldn’t do, allowed me to take small steps. After a few months, I was back in the gym doing light weights and gaining back my strength. 12 months later and I am back to being as fit and strong as I was pre-surgery.
This applies to anything in life. Just take the first step and start laying the foundation. It’s like Lego. It all starts with one block, then another, and another and before you know it, you have made a substantial change.
You need to make time for the things that you want to change. You will often have to give up one thing to gain another. Taking that first step is the hardest.
