In a world dominated by social media, everything seems picture-perfect and effortless. But let's take a moment to ponder why we are often drawn to the allure of "easy" and why it may not lead to true satisfaction and joy. As I reflect on my own experiences, I realise that the most rewarding moments in my life have come from overcoming challenges and obstacles and doing hard things.
Remember when you walked up that mountain, ran your first 5km, or took your first language class? I do. Those experiences still bring a smile to my face and the things I recount the most in life. I can’t recall the easy hikes I completed whilst living in Colorado but I can sure describe the hard ones in detail.
I remember when I first learned to ski. I hated it. I thought it was so hard and a waste of time. But a friend convinced me to give it another go. Who would've guessed, 20 years later I chose to live in the mountains of Colorado to embrace my love of skiing.
I remember taking a Spanish class in Mexico City. My young teacher was so enthusiastic and excited to help me but I was so frustrated I wanted to punch him.. LOL. I still can’t speak Spanish but I remember that day like it was yesterday.
I’m a firm believer in doing something really hard every year to take us out of our comfort zone. This could be anything that you find uncomfortable. It doesn’t have to be a physical challenge.
Take yourself on your first solo trip overseas where you don’t know the language
Climb your first 14,000 ft peak.
Host a dinner party for 10 people and prepare a 3-course meal.
Learn a new language.
Start a business on the side. Something you have been thinking about for years.
Stop drinking alcohol for 6 months.
Do something every day for 30 days. This will break routines and create new habits
The list is endless. Get creative
Don’t do it easy. Easy doesn’t bring memories and joy.
Stay strong and get after it.
